Athletic Trainers:
Every School Should Have One

MomsTeam has long advocated that parents have the right to expect that a certified athletic trainer (AT) is on staff. An AT is so important that he or she should be the next hire after the head coach. According to a 2010 University of Michgan poll, two thirds of parents surveyed agree, supporting a requirement that high schools have an AT on site for practices and games.

The ongoing incidence of youth sports injuries and catastrophic events resulting in death has highlighted a need for immediate and improved injury prevention and treatment at the high school level. Supported by 66 sports and health organizations, including MomsTeam.com, the Youth Sports Safety Alliance, formed by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, recently hosted, and MomsTeam attended (both as a member of the media and as a longtime youth sports safety advocate), the Third Annual Youth Sports Safety Summit on Capitol Hill.

Concussions make impact in classroom

The soccer ball hit Marlo McElroy like a bullet to her forehead. Sideline spectators gasped.

"She didn't lose consciousness," recalled Marlo's mother, Tracy McElroy of Wildwood. "But by the time I got to her a few minutes later, her eyes were glassy and rolling back in her head. She wasn't able to answer questions like, 'Who's the president?' or 'When is your birthday?'"

That was seven weeks ago. Marlo, 12 and a seventh-grader at Rockwood Valley Middle School, was subsequently diagnosed with a concussion. She has been on "brain rest" ever since.

The Missouri Youth Sports Brain Injury Prevention Act became law this year. When student athletes are suspected of having a concussion or brain injury, the measure prohibits them from returning to practice and games until specific medical steps are taken and they have fully recovered. Illinois passed a similar law.

Recently the Missouri Legislation passed and enacted the Interscholastic Youth Brain Injury Prevention Act. A summary of the bill can be found here, and a copy of the bill can be found here.

Athletic Trainers are a licensed healthcare professional with specialized training to provide the necessary concussion evaluation as outlined by this law.

Protect Mid States Hockey Athletes

Hockey is an inherently dangerous sport. Hockey is classified as a collision sport along with football and rugby. A collision sport is defined as a sport where one of the objectives is to collide with an opponent or other inanimate objects. Hockey is a fast paced sport that accentuates the differences in talent from player to player. In high school athletics these differences in talent equate to differences in size and skill, therefore increasing the risk of injury.
Protect high school hockey athletes.
