BEE CAVE, Texas (KXAN) – Deadly lightning strikes happen all over America and yet there are no overarching rules mandating the use of modern detection equipment for sports leagues or outdoor athletic facilities, according to the president of a Colorado-based lightning safety institute.
“(There are) zero national requirements for lightning protection except for the Federal Government – military mostly,” Richard Kithil of the National Lightning Safety Institute wrote KXAN in an email.

MomsTeam has long advocated that parents have the right to expect that a certified athletic trainer (AT) is on staff. An AT is so important that he or she should be the next hire after the head coach. According to a 2010 University of Michigan poll, two-thirds of parents surveyed agree, supporting a requirment that high schools should have an AT on site for practices and games.
The ongoing incidence of youth sport injurings and catastrophic events resulting in death has highlighted a need for immediate and improved injury prevention and treatment at the high school level.

The soccer ball hit Marlo McElroy like a bullet to her forehead. Sideline spectators gasped.
"She didn't lose consciousness," recalled Marlo's mother, Tracy McElroy of Wildwood. "But by the time I got to her a few minutes later, her eyes were glassy and rolling back in her head. She wasn't able to answer questions like, 'Who's the President?' or 'When is your birthday?'"
That was seven weeks ago. Marlo, 12, and a seventh-grader at Rockwood Valley Middle School, was subsequently diagnosed with a concussion. She has been on 'brain rest' ever since.
The Missouri Youth Sports Brain Injury Prevention Act became law this year. When student athletes are suspected of having a concussion or brain injury, the measure prohibits them from returning to practice and games until specific medical steps are taken and they have fully recovered. Illinois passed a similar law.
Recently the Missouri Legislation passed and enacted the Interscholastic Youth Brain Injury Prevention Act. A summary of the bill can be found here, and a copy of the bill can be found here.
Athletic Trainers are a licensed healthcare professional with specialized training to provide the necessary concussion evaluation as outlined by this law.
